Well I am not going to be active from tomorrow till this Friday and again from the 28th to the 12th. I figured I should let you all know and decided to make a thread about it so other people can announce being gone. The reasons are as follows, this Friday I will be taking a test as part of the USA Biology Olympiad and the second time I will be on vacation.

This is an issue we have not had to deal with before, but it's worthy of an announcement.
We do not plan to halt the game for players who are absent because this would be a problem for other players and would be unworkable with a large number of players. Instead, players who become inactive for any reason will be assumed to have taken no actions during such period of inactivity except perhaps routine actions. Player characters will also be assumed to make minimally necessary responses such as attempting to flee if an obvious danger is approaching. This does not extent to giving obvious orders to subordinates. If an enemy army invades your country while you are inactive, your character may flee to save himself, but may be incapacitated by stress or physically ill and temporarily unable to carry out his duties. All the non-player characters in the province will continue to take reasonable actions such as mobilizing and deploying troops and fighting off invaders. This may be done according to plans previously drawn up by their player character leader if any such plans exist.
For planned absences, it would be reasonable to provide an in-game reason such as perhaps when you go on vacation, your character is also on vacation, away from the capital city.
It may alarm some players to learn that it is possible for their province or nation to be invaded or to rise in rebellion while they are absent and have no way to deal with it. This is another reason why it is good for your character to go away to some undisclosed location if you, the player, must take a break from the game. It is more likely your character will at least be alive when you return.
We see no good alternative to this approach. Making entire nations untouchable because a player is inactive is too unrealistic to be seriously considered. Real leaders go on vacation or are incapacitated by illness from time to time. Real world interruptions and this policy can be considered to simulates that.

It is okay to appoint a second-in-command to take over in the event of incapacity. The second-in-command may be a non-player character you think you can trust (don't just create a new character, you have to find one).
The second-in-command may also be a character played by a real life friend or relative you ask to look after your province or nation while you are unable to. In game terms, the second-in-command is generally called an "Ulor Ekanor" (Lieutenant Governor). Not all provinces have them, but some do and they are appointed or dismissed by the Ulor at will.
We would prefer that your Ulor Ekanor or similar character not be played by someone who already has a character in the game. We can't enforce a ban on that, though, so it is not actually prohibited.

Hello everybody, You may not remember me, but that's okay. It's been a long time. I know I have not been on the forums or playing the game at all for several months now. This was not intentional, and it had nothing to do with the minor troubles with nomads I was having in my province. I was caught up in a number of other interests so I eventually forgot about Nations and Empires. Currently I am trying to juggle school, friends, computer programming, and starting up a band, so I regretfully don't have much time at all for computer games, even such mind-blowingly realistic and enjoyable games such as Nations and Empires. And, the reason this is in the Inactivity thread: I am leaving Nations and Empires. Unfortunately, this inactivity is permanent. Tonight and tomorrow (perhaps the day after) are the last days I will be spending time on the forums. Goodbye everyone. Clabbuk

Sorry to see you go. We wish you well.
Your character will be considered to have resigned as Ulor. If you ever want to play again, you could be the same character and probably get appointed Ulor again, possibly of the same province or maybe another one.

Sorry about this, but something has started taking up a lot of time. I'm not sure when the game can resume, but just as I thought I'd have time for this again, something else is going on.
I do plan to get the game going again, but I'm not sure when.

Sorry again that this game has been so inactive for so long. I am planning to get it going again assuming you guys want me to.
If you want, we can e -mail you when it starts again so you don't have to keep checking the board.
