Ekanor Falan An Op says, "I am not willing to come out of the fortress, nor to open the gates. But we could lower a rope for you or someone else to come up if you have proof. But what sort of proof could it possibly be? If it is another paper of some sort, I will save you the trouble. I have no scribe in here to read it to me nor would I trust any that would be allowed through the lines of the besiegers."

"Well I can read it to you and I have the seal of Rubanya. Would that be enough or do I have to send a letter to Rubanya himself to have him come here to resolve this issue?"

An Op says, "I'm afraid that's not good enough. I can verify the seal, but the document could say anything. It could be a decree on the Dog Tax for all I know."
Someone on the wall beside An Op says something to him and An Op turns to confer with the man. Then, An Op speaks loudly again to those below, "We have a proposal. You need only risk one horse. We will risk one man. He will be a man I trust, but who is not particularly important to me so you will gain little if you kill or capture him. I propose to lower a rope and my man will climb down. You will give him a horse and he will ride to Yishil as fast as possible. He will convey my request to Rubanya for orders on how to deal with this unexpected situation. After he returns, you will allow him to come back into the fortress unharmed. Then, when he is safe inside the fortress and beyond any thread or coercion, I will listen to what he has to say and if he brings me orders from Rubanya, I will obey them. That is my proposal. It has the advantage that I may swiftly know the truth or falsehood of your words... whether or not you accept the proposal. Either my rider brings me the truth, or your refusal to let him ride tells me all I need to know."

Kortelan nods. "Yes that seems like a good idea. Tell your man he must be careful though. Yishil may be under siege. We have heard reports of Krulmuk moving and he is either coming here or heading to Yishil. He believes that you are on his side because you are fighting me and I am known to be on Rubanya's side. Let your man down and he will be provided with a horse. Can I have your word that if Krulmuk gets here before your man gets back that at least for the battle we will set aside our conflicts and fight our common foe?"

"If the Krulmuk you speak of is the same Gurikan Falanorata Krulmuk, then I do not consider him my foe. It is my understanding that Rubanya has taken over as commander of the Imperial Army and dismissed Krulmuk and all other soldiers in the capital, but I am under the impression that was temporary and I don't know what has happened since then. If Krulmuk or anyone else comes to Angenmar Paven, I will hold and defend this position until I receive authenticated orders to the contrary. You may think Krulmuk could capture this fortress. I would have to agree. If he had an army, he could, but it would have to be done by siege and that would take a very long time. If this is not good enough for your purposes, then I suggest that if Krulmuk does come here with an army and attacks, that you withdraw your army."

"You are entitled to your opinion no matter what it may cost you. He fights for Levorek and news seems to agree that he has attacked Kast Yvar and won. Although somehow Prince Shalimuk survived and is still alive. If he comes to my home land I will fight him off. I was born and raised not far from here in this very Solon and I do not intend for it to fall to anyone who fights for the illegitimate hair to the throne. Send down your man and we will have him on his way."

An Op agrees.
Shortly afterwards, a rope is lowered from the wall of the fortress near the gate and a man climbs down and approaches Ersolan's men.
"Shall I give him a horse?" Lorgan asks Kortelan.

Kortelan nods at Lorgan. "Yes. Now you and Ersolan start to disciplining the men. Teach them to be real soldiers. If they want to have a hope against Krumluk then they have to be the best of the best. Lorgan please lend me some of your men so we can start clearing the Ulor's palace. Send for Ekanor Falan Korinyva to meet me there."

Korinyva does not come. Upon further inquiry, Kortelan learns that Korinyva has gone to one of the ships in the harbour to talk to the naval commander. He does not return for the rest of the day.
As evening approaches, Lorgan suggests that Kortelan sleep in one of the houses in town instead of on the ground. Many of the troops are now using the various abandoned buildings for barracks. The civilians who lived here are nowhere in sight.
Before this can be done, one of Lorgan's men returns to report that they have cleared out the Ulor's palace of debris and corpses sufficiently that it can be used as a barracks.
Lorgan suggests that Kortelan sleep there for the night and asks if his men may stay there also. He reports that there are several buildilngs inside the walls that surround the Ulor's palace and even the main building has rooms that were built to be barracks for the guards. There are also stables for the horses, but probably not enough for all the horses Lorgan's men rode to be inside.

The next day, Lorgan's men have mostly run out of food. Some have been looking for more in the town, but found that it has already been looted of food supplies by the other soldiers.
Shortly afterwards, Lorgan reports, "We have found some food in some storerooms on the lower floor of the palace."
Soon afterwards, Lorgan's men have cooked a meal and Ersolan's much larger force is hauling out large amounts of food and taking it to their camps.
A messenger arrives from Korinyva saying that he is back ashore and will meet with Kortelan if Kortelan wishes to come to Korinyva's camp.

"Lorgan please send a message to Korinyva saying that I have worked something out with the garrison and him and his forces are not needed here and can go back to Yishil. I am going to start administering this province." After that he found Ersolan and told him to start gathering the people for a meeting with Kortelan.

Lorgan sends the message.
Kortelan finds Ersolan who says, "Do you mean the civilian people or our soldiers?"
Lorgan comes riding up to report that the message was sent and says, "Now we wait, right?"

"I mean any and every civilian you can find. If we can get the support of the civilians without the garrison then maybe Ap Op will give in sooner." Kortelan looks at Lorgan "Yeah pretty much. I want you to order all men under my command to start rebuilding."

Kortelan looked at them. "Hello citizens of Kajakan Folon. Before the battle here started I was appointed Ulor of your Salan and your last Ulor did not wish to leave his post and therefore was killed. I am very sorry that there had to be a battle here and now it is over and my men are rebuilding your city. Go tell everyone you know that there may be a new Ulor but I promise that I will not change any laws or taxes for now. The only change is I will continue my strict policies against corruption. If anyone in this Salan has a problem have them come to me and I will listen and try to solve it. Your new Ulor cares about you and I want you to spread the word about this."
