He nods to the men. "Return the goods you have looted and then assemble and get ready for training we are staying here in case Krumluk attacks here." Kortelan then reads the new message and smiles "Rash Krumluk rash."
Letter to Rubanya:
In my last message I mentioned the possibility of pretending to join Krumluk's forces if we could stay behind. I had been planning that since before this battle because I figured that he would act a lot faster then he did and my forces would be just getting to Yishil after the siege had started. In doing such I made a letter full of lies that made it appear that I would be willing to join his side. He says he is sending it to you as proof of what a "treacherous rat" I am. I know I probably should have made you aware of that note before now but I did not think it needed to be brought to light but now with his threats of sending it I realize I need to tell you now and should have told you before. I know this will probably throw my loyalty in doubt but if you would trust me in this one decision I promise that my loyalty will never be in doubt again and I personally assure you that my men will be the heroes of this civil war. They will fight the best and the hardest of all your men.
Ulor Kortelan.

Korinyva makes no direct move, but some of his officers take time to visit with the troops from Kajakan Tros and tell them about Rubanya's letter. Now, Rubanya's reply to the latest message arrives by courier. It reads: Ulor Kortelan,
Hand over command of all your troops to Korinyva without delay.

Kortelan calls a meeting with Ersolan and Lorgan. He shows them the letters "Well Rubanya thinks me a traitor because I have enough since to attempt to pull a fast one on our foe but when I fail and explain my motives to him he says I must give up all control of my men. What do you two think we should do?"

Both of them fall silent and give the matter some thought.
Lorgan says, "It doesn't leave you with any choice. You have to hand over command to Korinyva."
Ersolan says, "If he really thought you a traitor, he would remove you as Ulor also."
Lorgan says to Ersolan, "Maybe he will, after Kortelan has no troops left. In fact, that's the test." He turns to Kortelan, "If he tries to remove you as Ulor, then you know he thinks you have betrayed him. If not, then he just wants the troops to be under Korinyva's command. Either way, my men and I came to serve you and the people of the Verron, not any Imperial prince or politician. No matter what Rubanya says, we will stand with you. If he tries to have you arrested, we'll help you escape."
Ersolan says, "I didn't want to be in the Imperial Army anyway. Let him have that rabble. I'll return to Bakoya Kajak to the North Bearland Guards. Give me those volunteers and I'll build a real army for you."

"I think I will do that. But I want to address the men. Tell them that they have been ordered to be handed over to Korinyva and go to Yishil and abandon their homeland, but I will stay with a small force to stand up to anyone who comes to harm this area and I will ask them if they want to stand with me."

The men are assembled. Kortelan gives the speech.
Of all the men of the three kantoro of the Imperial Army garrison of Kajakan Tros, the only one who volunteer to remain behind with Kortelan are Ersolan and the other men from the Rizado Kajakan Tros.
Lorgan and his men also volunteer to stay.
Ersolan then informs Ekanor Falan Korinyva that the following units are now under his command:
1st Kantora Kajakan Tros 2nd Kantora Kajakan Tros 3rd Kantora Kajakan Tros

Two days pass. During this time, Korinyva does not leave. Kortelan learns that he has ordered the army to begin constructing ladders and to prepare for an assault on the garrison fortress.

Kortelan shook his head. "They will never learn will they? Most to all of their people will die. Lorgan will you please talk to An Op again? Please try to make him see reason. Ersolan start sending out scouting parties for Krumluk's army. I am going to send a letter to Galan."

Ersolan says, "Scouting parties? I only have four men under my command here. The rest are all back at Bakoya Kajak."
Lorgan says, "I'll send scouts. My men can move faster on horseback anyway. I'll talk to An Op, but it might do more good if Korinyva talks to him again. I'll tell him An Op has already agreed to give in as soon as his rider returns."
Lorgan then departs.

The next day, Korinyva holds another parley with An Op and then agrees to delay his attack until the rider returns or seven more days, whichever comes first.
Lorgan's scouts are ranging up to 30 talong out from Angenmar Paven in all directions. There is no sign of Krulmuk, but Lorgan's men find an Imperial Courier taking a message north. They ask him for the latest news and he says that he has heard that Krulmuk's army arrived at Kast Yvar on the 10th and two days ago marched out along with all or nearly all of the Kast Yvar garrison. The news is that they are on the southwest road that leads to Yishil.

Later, a courier arrives from the north with a message for Ulor Kortelan. The message is from Galan. It reads: Ulor Kortelan 12/1/41 Cledman VI
Your Excellency,
I am glad to receive news that you may return. Things are calm, though I am keenly aware that we have virtually no guards here. The Rizado Kajakan Tros and the volunteers marched south the same day you left. I presume they have reached Angenmar Paven by now.
We were expecting the Verron Rond to mobilize, but four or five days ago, Rondalan came here to tell you that he has received a message from the Verron Rond Grand Lodge in Verronia telling him not to mobilze the Verron Rond in Kajakan Tros.
We now have only twenty men of the Rizado Kajakan Tros to maintain law and order in the entire province as well as to guard the palace.
Despite this, everything is going smoothly. I have not heard from the shipbuilders, but from here it looks like one or two of the ships are finished.
Your humble servant,
Galan

Kortelan looked at the note and swore. Then he handed it to Lorgan. "Look at that. Just look at what it says. The Verron Rond will not mobilize even if it means we can keep our lands safe." He looked at Ersolan "I have another errand for you. Please tell Korinyva that Krumluk's army seems to be moving for Yishil, he doesn't have time for an assault if he wants to go to Yishil with enough men to make a difference tell him the garrison of Kast Yvar has joined Krumluk. Also tell him that we have rumors that some troops are heading to link up with Krumluk but we will hold them off." as far as he knew that last bit was a total lie but maybe it would work.

Although yesterday Korinyva said he was "too busy" to meet with Ersolan, now he sent a messenger to inform Ersolan and Kortelan that Korinyva has received orders from Rubanya to return to Yishil immediately.

He shook his head. "That man is arrogant. He thinks he can do what ever he wants because he is trusted by Rubanya. Anyways on to other matters. Our forces are stretched dangerously thin, but so far nothing has tried to test that. How are our men coming on training? We need them to be a large cohesive force capable of matching a large elite army in battle. How are we going to do that? We are few against a flood."

Ersolan says to Ulor Kortelan, "There is something else I should mention. When we ordered the troops to return what they had looted, some of them returned items that had been looted from the Ulor's palace. We put them back in the palace, of course, including some money that was looted, several hundred baylo it looked like. I don't really have enough men to guard that much money very well. Can you ask Lorgan to have some of his men guard it. If you trust his men that much, I mean."
